Lichfield City stay top of the table after victory at Northwich Victoria

LICHFIELD City kept themselves top of the table after a 1-0 win at Northwich Victoria.

Callum Griffin’s second half strike was the difference between the two sides – but Ivor Green’s men could have given themselves extra breathing space had Dan Lomas’ penalty not been kept out by home keeper Joe Lawlor.

It was Northwich who carved out the first chance of the game though as City keeper James Beeson made a low save and then managed to recover to tip a second shot onto the post before also diverting a third effort on to the bar and away.

The woodwork then came to the rescue for Lichfield as a quick Northwich break saw the ball strike the post.

Two home efforts went over the bar as the visitors rode their luck in the first half.

But City began to find their rhythm with Griffin firing just over and then Kieran Francis’ free-kick forcing Lawlor into a smart save.

The momentum was with Lichfield in the run up to the break with Griffin forcing the home keeper into another stop.

The second period again saw Northwich start brightly with an early shot that crept narrowly wide.

But City went even closer with a goalmouth scramble that saw Jamie Spiers and Callum Rudd both see their shots cleared off the line.

The breakthrough eventually came 15 minutes from time when Rudd’s long throw saw a Liam Kirton shot blocked, but Griffin was on hand to fire home the loose ball.

Lichfield had a good chance to make it 2-0 when Kirton was brought down in the box, but Lawlor did well to keep out Lomas’ penalty.
