Late Josh Mansell strike earns victory for Lichfield City

LICHFIELD City beat Wolverhampton Casuals 1-0 to remain top of the Midland Football League Premier Division.

A solitary Josh Mansell strike won it late on for Ivor Green’s men in a cagey affair at the Trade Tyre Community Stadium.

City put the visitors under pressure early on as Callum Rudd’s long throws caused chaos in the penalty area.

The hosts peppered the Wolverhampton goal as the first half wore on, but with no joy.

At the other end, an alert James Beeson slid at the feet Phil McKerdy to keep the scores level with five minutes to go of the opening half, before Liam Kirton fired wide from a tight angle.

Neither side could grab a goal before the break – and the second half looked set to continue in the same manner.

A dangerous free kick out wide for Lichfield was cleared behind with 20 minutes to go.

Casuals were then awarded a free kick of their own, but Reece Mason’s effort was tipped over the bar by the Lichfield stopper.

Joe Haines flew in to prevent the away side from embarking on a one-on-one opportunity, before he eventually set up Mansell to give the hosts the lead that they had so desperately fought for.

The defender drove into the area curled his shot past Scott Cashmore into the bottom left-hand corner to win it for Lichfield with ten minutes to go.
